Project 1612 is proud to present Liu Yang: Experimental Photography on Sunday, October 20, 2024, from 3:00 to 6:00pm in Morton, Illinois. Following a week-long artist residency, Yang (she/her) will respond to the outdoor exhibition setting, interacting with the garden and yard as she sees fit for her work. Yang will give two artist talks, one at the exhibition and the other at the Peoria Public Library Main Branch (dates listed below).

Yang is a Chinese freelance artist, currently is living and working in Peoria,
Illinois. She has exhibited locally at the Peoria Art Guild and Studios on Sheridan, and has exhibited and published works in China at SEE+ Gallery, China Photography Magazine, Ying Photo Gallery, among others.

Yang began exploring camera-less experimental photography in 2017. Her interest in experimental forms of photography was inspired by a life-size maternity photogram of her in 2015—an image made by her husband and artist Qingjun Huang. All of Yang’s works are created in the dark room, however the images are not taken by camera, they are photogram—result of placing objects on light- sensitive photo paper. Details of the objects become lost, deformed, and appear to move. The outline and color of the objects are often manipulated by self-modified lights, multiple light exposures, or the use of light to draw on the photo paper. The entire process typically spans multiple days, and then is realized in the dark room. Between 2019-2022, Yang created the DREAM TRILOGY series, including DREAM, DREAM INCEPTION, and ANOTHER PLANET. She is fascinated with cosmic themes, the imagination of the future, and concerns for the Earth. Yang says, “When we look at our world from the perspective of the universe, when we see the images that James Webb send back about the deep space billions of light years away, we understand how tiny we are so does the human civilization.” Through her practice, she is imagining the possibilities of unknown planet and alien life, and “what humanity would be after becoming multi-planetary species.”

Project 1612 exhibitions are organized by co-founders Jessica Bingham and Alexander Martin. The 2024 residencies and exhibitions are sponsored by Big Picture Initiative, a Peoria, Illinois grassroots 501(c)(3) organization “formed by a group of dedicated volunteers who believe that art has the power to change our community.”
